DfE approve our new school bid

The Department for Education has approved the opening of the Sir Frederick Gibberd College, a new secondary school with sixth form that will open in Tendring Road, Harlow.

Proposed by the Burnt Mill Academy Trust, the group will now work towards opening for an intake of 240 Year 7 students in September 2018. Sir Frederick Gibberd College will utilise the benefits available to free school by offering 250 Sixth Form places from 2020.

The college is named after the master planner of Harlow New Town, Sir Frederick Gibberd, who you can read about on the Gibberd Garden website here.

Helena Mills, chief executive of Burnt Mill Academy Trust said:

“We are delighted that our exciting vision for the Sir Frederick Gibberd College has won official approval. Thank you to all those in the Harlow community who provided feedback and support with our bid, without your input we wouldn’t have been successful. We were overwhelmed by the number of families supporting our bid, especially those wanting an academic A Level provision.

We will be working hard with the local community over the next 12 months to ensure that the brand new building will be ready for the first group of Sir Frederick Gibberd children who will join us in 2018.”

Sarah Pearson, Interim Director of New Schools Network, said:

“The application process to set up a free school is incredibly demanding, so it is a testament to the hard work of Burnt Mill Academy Trust that they have been approved to open.

“This latest announcement means there are now more than 500 free schools open, or opening in the coming year, providing communities across the country with an additional 330,000 places. Free schools are proving increasingly popular with parents and are providing good new schools places for their local communities; outcomes for students at existing free schools have been fantastic and the schools themselves are more likely to be judged Outstanding by Ofsted than other state schools.”

Dates, Times and Locations of information events will be published here when confirmed.
