Burnt Mill Academy Trust

First careers day for BMAT

A day devoted to careers is set to inspire teenagers to strive for ambitious goals.

The Burnt Mill Academy Trust (BMAT) is holding its first careers day at Sir Charles Kao UTC, in Harlow.

Careers advisor Hayley Lancaster, of All Together, is working with the Trust to give students inspiration for their future career paths.

She spends three days per week at Sir Charles Kao to deliver careers programmes and to give one to one guidance to students. Year 11 are receiving support for their college applications, while Year 13 are working with Miss Lancaster to apply for university or apprenticeship places.

The careers day, on Wednesday March 14, will see Year 11 and 13 students from Sir Charles Kao and Year 10 to 13 students from Burnt Mill Academy and Epping St John’s School work on an enterprise project to give them an insight into their strengths.

During the second part of the day, local employers – including Princess Alexandra Hospital, GSK and HNE Media – will set up stands and give students an opportunity to find out about their industries and various roles.

Miss Lancaster said: “The message I’m giving to students is that while we can’t all be good at everything, everyone is good at something. It’s about discovering what is your genius.

“The careers day is about building students’ confidence and helping them to work out who they are as young people. We want them to get a feel for the careers which are out there and the pathways they could take, whether that be university or otherwise.

“It is the first time we have tackled careers in this way and it is really exciting.”

Lisa Tooley, head of school at Sir Charles Kao – which is due to join BMAT in March, said: “We are becoming a fully integrated part of BMAT and events like this show that if you enter one of our schools, you enter all of them and benefit from all of our shared qualities and opportunities.

“Careers are an area of strength for us at Sir Charles Kao, so we are sharing that – and our business contacts - with other Trust schools with this event.”
